Information regarding United States Congressional Representative for Texas Congressional District 6 (CD-6)
Statement Regarding Proxy voting:
November 30, 2021 - For the U.S. House to conduct business or vote on legislation, a quorum of members must be present. Using COVID as an excuse, Democrats are allowing proxy voting – letting another member to vote for them when they are not present. Democrats are also using proxies to establish a quorum of the U.S. House. Leader McCarthy and most House Republicans object to using proxies, especially to establish a quorum.
I have not had another Member of the U.S. House proxy vote for me and I don’t plan on doing so. I have, however, proxy voted for other Republican members of the Texas delegation who requested I do so because they could not be physically present in the House Chamber.
On Friday, November 29, 2021 there needed to be 218 Members of the U.S. House present in the House Chamber to establish a quorum in order to hold votes. Leader McCarthy suspected the Democrats did not have enough members in the Chamber to establish a quorum and conduct business. So, Leader McCarthy asked Republican members to withhold our votes to demonstrate that fact. Specifically, I did not cast a vote to lay the motion to reconsider the vote on passage of H.R. 5376 on the table to illustrate the fact that the Democrats could only establish a quorum using proxies, rather than actually having their Members present.
